Zzyzx Palm Heaven

The name "ZZYZX" was coined by a colorful and controversial figure named Curtis Howe Springer, a self-proclaimed minister and radio personality who settled there in the 1940s. He claimed the land, built a spa and resort called the Zzyzx Mineral Springs and Health Spa, and broadcast radio programs promoting his various herbal remedies and health products. He invented the name "Zzyzx" himself, reportedly wanting to create the last word in the English language. For decades he operated there without proper authorization, and the federal government eventually evicted him in 1974 for illegally occupying public land.
