Canyon Art Photography - Grand Canyon, Arizona
There is nothing like the Grand Canyon in the state of Arizona. If you want to try feeling really, really small, this place is a must-visit. The heights and the distances you can see in front of you stop being realistic. Especially for the people who spend a lot of time in the city or where the land surface is more flat. Your mind may get used to the idea that the world is confined to some kind of limits....
Those limits quickly get dissolved when you step to the edge of the canyon and your legs start to wobble because your automatic response is to protect you from danger, so your legs become limb almost to prevent you from stepping further. At those moments, I believe our minds get simply overloaded and don't know how to process things properly. Hence, your mind will opt for just weakening your legs or making your head spin, forcing you to step back into safety.
This is probably the reason why they've built fences in more popular areas at the Grand Canyon South Rim, where thousands of tourists visit each year. The fences were built, after people started falling down for going too close to the edge. By the way, the same fences were erected at the Horse Shoe Bend - another famous tourist attraction spot in Arizona, where the Colorado River has carved out a shape in the form of a horse shoe in the canyon. These canyons are really no joke. The drops are immediate and reach heights of 3-4 thousand feet. They are also so large across, where your normal vision can not really tell the distance between the walls of the canyon. In some places, Grand Canyon measures 15 miles across, but when you stand there, it looks like it's perhaps 2-3 miles max. Rim-to-Rim hike at the Grand Canyon, that takes you from South to North Rim or vice versa, stretches for 24 miles. It is a pretty strenuous hike and can be even dangerous if you do it without supplies or preparation. The low and the high temps can be brutal depending on the time of the year.
The canyon stretches for hundreds of miles in different directions throughout the deserts. There are many different points you can access by car, most canyon areas can only be accessed on foot. It is recommended you do a lot of research before you explore remote areas of Grand Canyon, because they can get really dangerous. In most, there is absolutely no people, water, food, not even cell phone reception. If you want to explore them, it is advisable to get a professional Grand Canyon hiking guide, who can help you prepare, plan and to make sure you bring all the proper supplies needed.
